Ingredients
Rolled oats– These are not only great in terms of texture but also from a nutrition perspective. Steel cut oats is simply not the right variety to make overnight oats. And quick cooking or instant overnight oats is stripped bare of almost all nutrition. Old-fashioned rolled oats is not only rich in nutrients but also has a chewy texture. When this is mixed with yogurt or milk and is soaked overnight, it becomes a delectable mushy mass.
Berries– I have used a combination of blueberries and strawberries in this recipe. You can also use raspberries, blackberries or even mulberries in this recipe.
Yogurt- For some reason, everyone at home loves berries mixed with yogurt. In fact, that is how I introduced overnight oats to my family. For some people who are used to eating piping hot breakfasts like Idlis and Moong Bean Dosas, the idea of eating a no-cook chilled breakfast can take some time to get used to. What is the best way to do this? Incorporate their favorite snack- berry yogurt into a basic overnight oats recipe. And you have a winner!
Chia seeds– For the uninitiated, chia is a rich source of protein and Omega-3. This makes them a fantastic breakfast option. While we love eating chia puddings, I am always looking for other ways to incorporate chia into our diet. Overnight oats and chia work well together.
Maple syrup- Because I used regular homemade yogurt and frozen berries, I added some maple syrup to sweeten this recipe. You can always skip this if you want a no-added-sugar overnight oats recipe.
Frozen Berries for Overnight Oats
I have used fresh berries to make this easy overnight oats. If you are not able to source them fresh, use frozen berries. Frozen berries and fresh berries work equally well here. I just do not enjoy frozen berries as a topping because they are too cold for my taste. But if you enjoy a cold treat for breakfast, use frozen berries as topping too.
Meal Planning and Prep Work
Meal Planning
Overnight oats are great to include in a regular meal plan. Because these keep well for upto a week in the fridge, you can prep these over the weekend and you will have a week’s worth breakfast ready.
I use Mason jars to prep my overnight oats. You can also use any fridge-friendly containers. While prepping these in multiple batches, try not to add nuts and seeds. Instead, add the nuts and seeds as a topping in the morning. This way, the nuts and seeds will be crunchy and add a great texture.
