Ever since we bought an air fryer, we have been quite indulgent in the snack front. Every week, I have been experimenting with two recipes. Testing them twice means we get to snack more as well. Well, that is what I call as the perks of being a food blogger.
These fries have become our family favorite and my daughter loves it so much that she prefers them to the potato fries. We love eating these with all sorts of dips and sauces. Please check out our serving suggestions for more dipping sauce ideas.

Ingredients
This recipe requires minimal ingredients. The sweet potatoes are the star here.
- Sweet Potatoes– To make these fries, I have used Garnet variety of sweet potatoes. These are orange in color and have a starchy mouth feel. You can also use Japanese sweet potatoes.
- Dried rosemary– because why should rosemary shine its glory only on potatoes, right?
- Garlic powder– this is that ingredient which makes these ordinary fries exceptional. So, please do not skip this.
- Paprika– we love our fries spicy. And paprika is what we prefer for heat. Read the variations column for more seasoning ideas.
- Olive oil– yes, these are air fried but they do need some amount of oil. And for veggies like sweet potatoes, I find olive oil ideal. You can also use any neutral flavored vegetable oil instead.
- Salt– I have used regular Kosher salt. But you can always experiment with Himalayan pink salt or truffle salt.
Variations
Some recipes are a creative cook’s best friend. This is one such recipe. Here are a list of seasonings you can use in this recipe.
- EVOO, dried Italian herbs, truffle salt and pepper
- Oil, Peri Peri seasoning, garlic powder and salt
- Olive oil, smoked paprika and salt
- Coconut oil, Idli Podi, Salt and curry leaves
- Use the same seasonings in the recipe, reduce the salt and finish with some grated parmesan on top.
Recipe Notes
- Chop them up evenly. This will give you evenly air fried fries. Use a sharp paring knife to do this efficiently. I recommend chopping them into 1/4 inch thick fingers.
- Do not overcrowd the basket. Overcrowding will steam the potatoes instead of roasting them. The sweet potatoes must be arranged in a single layer without any overlaps.
- No preheating is required for this recipe.
- I have a 5.5 quart air fryer. The basket is fairly large and can accommodate 1.5 pounds of chopped sweet potatoes easily. If your basket is smaller, make the fries in smaller batches.
- Air fryer timings may vary based on the brand and model of the air fryer you own.
- I have a basket style air fryer. But you can make this in a toaster style air fryer too. Since the toaster oven style air fryer cooks faster, reduce the temperature to 350 F (180 C) and cook for 10 minutes.
- Don’t have an air fryer? You can bake these in the oven too. Preheat the oven to 400 F (200 C). Prep the fries. Place them on a baking sheet in a single layer and bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until they are crispy, turning them mid way.
- Serve them immediately after they are done. They tend to lose their crispiness once they are cold. To reheat leftover fries, put them back in the basket and cook until reheated and crisped up again.
Air fryer frozen sweet potato fries
In this recipe, we will be making the fries from scratch. But say, you have a bag of frozen fries, then what? In that case, your job got simpler. Follow these steps to make air fryer frozen fries.
- Preheat the air fryer to 400 F (200 C). Mine has a preset preheat setting. If your air fryer does not have this option, then preheat for 5 minutes by setting the timer manually.
- Coat the basket with cooking spray or a thin layer of olive oil.
- Arrange the frozen fries in a single layer, making sure they have space around for air flow while they roast. This will prevent them from getting steamed.
- Air fry at 400 F (200 F) for 15 to 18 minutes until the fries are crisp, shaking them every 5 minutes once.
- When done, remove and garnish with fresh parsley or cilantro. Serve hot.
Shelf life, storage and leftovers
These fries are best consumed as soon as they are ready. But if you have leftovers, you can reheat and enjoy them later too. Store leftover fries in a covered container in the fridge. This keeps well for 3 days.
To reheat, preheat the air fryer at 400 F (200 C) for 5 minutes. Place the leftover fries in the air fryer basket and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until they are reheated and crisped up again.
Serving suggestions
Since these have a hint of sweet in them, these are best enjoyed with spicy dips. Some dipping sauces that pair well with these fries include cilantro Chimi sauce, Jalapeno ranch sauce and Indian mint sauce.
